Diaphonemes, diaphones, and diasystems OH MY!
There are some entries on Wikipedia that are so wonderfully done, they make your jaw drop. This is one of them (thanks to Daniel Ezra Johnson for first pointing me to it). This entry is worth reading if one wants to understand a good chunk of dialectology and sound change literature written shortly before Labov arrived on the scene in the early-to-mid 1960s.
